Post-passover and bowling

Small but nice turnout for post-Passover chametz eating at Bertucci's. For whatever it's worth, I really like their pizza and rolls, and it was a good way to break Passover.

Bowling is still on for Saturday, so come join us at 7 pm at Severna Park lanes. Note this is a time change. People can just pay as they go, and there is food available for whoever wants.

We had a great month of March events for the Jewish Young Professionals. Several of us supported Temple Beth Shalom’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity and its Interfaith Coalition by going to see an interfaith comedy show held at Broadneck High School organized by Carl Simon. Carl will be working with Habitat to organize the Jewish Young Professionals’ efforts in the Interfath Coalition and the build on Clay St in Annapolis. Look for details for signing up for builds in the near future. Elana and I are delighted to host over a dozen people for the Shabbat Supper on March 12^th. Also, if you are interested in saving on energy bills and usage, Repower@Home will be coming to the temple on March 24th (Wednesday) 6:30 -8:00 pm. They'll be giving out pointers and have a home energy auditor on site to help sign folks up to start saving that energy right away. RSVP to Ben if you are interseted.

Spring is on its way and in April, we’re going to get together for a Post-Passover Hametz Hodgepodge (April 6^th), join forces with the Chavurah for Families with Children for bowling (April 10^th), celebrate Shabbat (date and host TBA), and join in the fun for Mitzvah Day (April 25^th). Hey, even if you missed the Kosher for Passover wine tasting at Kol Shalom this past Friday, that ok. If you're interested, you can still place an order with Kol Shalom and support local business and local synagogue and get some good stuff in the process! Well, despite threats of snow, a half dozen of us made it to Pigtown to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity on Jan 30. Thanks so much! We cleared out some roof trash and start framing some walls before the snow really started falling heavily, calling it a day early and making it back in one piece. Good job to all!

February is short, but there's a bunch going on this month too. We have a Wine Tasting on the 13th, Shabbat dinner on the 19th, and we'll be listening to the Megillah reading for Purim on the 27th. Feel free to sign up or let me know if you're intrested.

Matinee and MooShu

Dec 25 found a whole bunch of us gathered at the Annapolis Mall to see the opening of Sherlock Holmes, which was an entirely different rendering of the character from what I recall from reading the books many years ago.

Regardless, it was fun to hang out and meet some new folks over dinner, some of whom showed us just to eat while others headed off after the movie. Fourteen of us horded upon the Court of Shanghai on West St and debated the relative merits of Sherlock Holmes vs. Avatar and very long listing of the benefits of JDate. I had a great time, and hope others did as well.

Habitat for Humanity

Working on setting up a Habitat for Humanity event in January. There is also an exciting possibility to sign on as a partner in an interfaith coalition in Annapolis. The build will be in Annapolis starting in March for one Sunday a month. Dates will be announced closer to the time. Please comment or contact Ben if you are interested in signing up.

First Habitat date is January 30, 2010.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is coming to Temple Beth Shalom (TBS) in 2010! Working with Calvert Farms farmer Pam Stegall, a subscription to the weekly share of farm-fresh, delicious, organic, and local veggies will be available.

Safam in Concert

Safam is the Boston-based six man band that has dominated Jewish music since 1974 with their Jewish American sound. Often copied but never duplicated,they are originals: original music, original lyrics, and original arrangements. Their tapestry of music has become a part of the fabric of our Jewish lives and covers a variety of styles including Rock, Pop, Chasidic, Gospel, Cantorial, Reggae, Latin and Folk; all with a decidedly Jewish Flavor. Laughter, tears, singing, dancing, nostalgia and hope are among the whirlwind of emotions that one experiences at a Safam concert.

Please make your $20 check payable to Temple Beth Shalom and mail it to the temple at Temple Beth Shalom 1461 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd. Arnold, MD 21012. The deadline is Monday, November 16th.

The concert is at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, 7401 Park Heights Ave, Baltimore, MD 21208-5490. We'll meet at Temple Beth Shalom parking lot at 7pm to carpool to the event and sit together. Concert is from 8-11pm.

Sabbath Super Supper Series

We are starting a round robin series of fun, informal Shabbat dinners! We anticipate that hosts will change regularly, so please let us know if you would like to volunteer to host. Generally, we’re thinking that hosts will provide a main course and that guests will bring something to share as well – a side dish, salad, dessert, wine, or challah. Hope you can join us!

The first will be hosted by Rachelle and Ari Tannenbaum on November 20. Please call 410 757 6746 to RSVP and coordinate a side dish or dessert to bring. Come enjoy the company of other 20-30 somethings, and let the kids enjoy an evening at home.

Jewish Young Professionals Sandwhich Making Social

Well, its been a long while of inactivity, but Rosh Hashana is right around the corner, and this is the year to get some programming for young professional Jews off the ground.

We're going to kick it off this year by putting the social back into social service!
Come meet other Jewish young professionals in Anne Arundel County, and do a mitzvah at the same time! We will be making bagged lunches for Light House, an organization in Annapolis that provides shelter as well as homelessness prevention services. And, of course, we will be socializing as we work. This event is a week before Rosh Hashanah--what a wonderful way to usher in the new year!

Please help us cover the cost of supplies. The suggested donation is $10. If we wind up with any money left over, we will donate it to Light House.

In addition to food, Light House is always in need of travel-sized toiletries. So if you've got any small toothpaste tubes, or hotel soaps or shampoos, please bring them with you.

Shabbat in the area

Hi everyone, Some of you may already have received the email from Vicki Sitron announcing the latest round of Shabbat Clusters. If you haven't,here's her description: "Shabbat Clusters are groups of approximately 8-14 people (ages 21-35)who meet monthly for informal potluck Shabbat dinners in each others homes all over the DC Metro area. All participants who register for Shabbat Clusters will be placed into groups that will meet for their first Shabbat on Friday, June 29. Over 1,800 people have participated in a Shabbat cluster in the last six years! Are you ready to meet some new people and expand your Jewish horizons? Clusters are encouraged to hold dinners monthly and even branch out to other activities... the sky is the limit! We shuffle the clusters twice a year, so this round is expected to run for approximately six months."

What you may NOT know is that, this time around, Vicki has agreed to add "AA/PG Counties" as one of the location options when choosing acluster.
